From the field to your table: An annual production of 1.2 million acorn-fed Iberian hams

On this occasion, we have a very interesting fact to share with you, courtesy of our Production Director, Marta Blázquez.

Did you know that every year in Spain 1.2 million acorn-fed Iberian hams are produced?

Yes, this striking number is the result of the effort and dedication in raising 600,000 Iberian pigs that enjoy the nutritious acorns during the montanera , the final stage of development of these animals that lasts from October to March, more or less.

And taking into account that each Iberian pig provides us with two hams (hind legs), we arrive at that astonishing figure. Furthermore, although we are now talking only about hams, it must be taken into account that we will also obtain the same number of shoulders (front legs).

This production not only reflects the excellence in raising Iberian pigs due to its quality, but also the richness of a gastronomic tradition that extends throughout Spain.

But what could this mean in terms of distribution? For example, if we think about the entire Spanish population, which is 47 million people, each person could taste approximately 115 grams of acorn-fed Iberian ham per year, which is equivalent to a well-filled standard plate. Imagine if we distributed these hams worldwide! We hardly touch a gram per head.

Anyway, the truth is that this is just a fun numbers game, a curiosity... because the truth be told, there may be people who don't like Iberian acorn-fed ham - even if we find it hard to believe... it's like that -, or There will be people who may not get to try it...
